What Then?

  • Application Screening:
    • Application Pending: Your application will undergo basic review by our team. We may be in touch for additional information during this time.
    • Confirmed: Your application has been accepted, and you are actively being considered for opportunities as they arise. As we recruit on a rolling basis, invitations to serve are extended depending on where each committee is in the annual cycle, and the balance of skills and expertise that are needed as terms change over.
    • You will receive an email when your application changes statuses, but you can always check the status by visiting your Volunteer Profile.
    • If for any reason you need to withdraw your application, you can do so by visiting your Volunteer Profile and clicking the button for "Withdraw Application". and clicking the button for "Withdraw Application".
  • Volunteer recruiting searches:
    • With your Volunteer Pool Opt In set to "Yes," you will automatically be considered for volunteer opportunities appropriate to your interest and expertise. We recruit on a rolling basis and you may not be matched with an opportunity right away: Invitations to serve are based on balancing a variety of attributes, as turnover of committee membership occurs, membership requirements change, and special needs arise.
  • Open opportunity emails:
    • You may receive email alerts when we think you'd be a good fit for a specific open volunteer opportunity. These are more ad hoc opportunities than the structured committee appointments, and opportunities are added and filled on an ongoing basis.
  • Check back at any time:
    • You can check on the status of your volunteer application by logging into the NBME Volunteer Community and checking under "My Volunteer Profile."
  • In the meantime:
    • Engage with the NBME Volunteer Community in the Open Forum.
    • With an active NBME Volunteer Community account, you have access to the Open Forum with other applicants, active volunteers, volunteer alumni and NBME staff members.
